Phil Collins

Review was originally published on August 29, 2023, at 8:30pm. Corrected with the fact that vocals were lip-synced on the music video, the track is available as audio and not just video.

Jenn Vix is from Providence, Rhode Island. She's collaborated with many artists like Andy Anderson (The Cure), Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie, The Cure), John Ashton (The Psychedelic Furs), Ali Score (original drummer of A Flock Of Seagulls), you'll find more talent she's collaborated with over the years in her discography. Be sure to wear a helmet and get a ride ready for the hospital, to make sure you don't suffer some injury comparable to a concussion from a mild head explosion. Her latest collab is with Vernon Reid, the guitarist of Living Colour for a cover of Phil Collin's retro hit, "In The Air Tonight".

Jenn Vix, "In the Air Tonight" (feat. Vernon Reid)

Jenn Vix has been wanting to do a cover of this song for some time now.

"I heard "In The Air Tonight" as a child, and from day one, it was a dream of mine to record a cover version of it; I was a child musician and singer. There is just something about it, and I waited for the right time to do it! When I spoke with Vernon Reid about playing on this track, he said that he also has a special memory associated with it, and having him on guitar on the track is an honor!"

I think we can all relate to this. As for those who are a too young to know this song, to your credit, reactors on YouTube have a positive response to the Collins classic. The drums are not only important because they stand out, but because Phil Collins' primary instrument is the drums. As a multi-instrumentalist, Jenn Vix is able to take on the drums for this song as well. Also, this song is in Jenn's wheelhouse, where her original tracks have everything that Collins' song does and more. Check out her "Shoplifting In Summertime".

Jenn doesn't waste any time with the build up and gets right to the first verse of the track, skipping through the build up we're used to hearing for the intro. The setting for the video is also appropriate to fit the words, "Well, if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand," as she performs the cover next to a body of water. To read the lyrics of the song today, which is a first for me, I would have thought Collins was talking about being cheated on. There's no doubt that he's angry. In a 2016 interview, however, the British musician says that the meaning of the song isn't very clear to him.

"One day I was working on a piece in D-minor, the saddest [key] of all. I just wrote a sequence, and it sounded nice. I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I’m not quite sure what the song is about, but there’s a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration."

Perhaps the reason the track is so memorable is because of its simplicity, and its dark feel. In fact, he was with Genesis when he wrote it but is glad to leave it for his solo debut because he felt it would be beneath the band's abilities. Because of its simplicity, the dynamics stand out, servicing the build up to the main drum groove at 3:18. Initially, I thought that Jenn was actually singing in the music video but confirmed it was lip-synced. The single is also available on Spotify.

As to her vocals, she adds a Diamanda Galas, Gitane Demone, and Eva Ortiz quality to it. Her vocals have already been compared to the likes of Annie Lennox and Shirley Manson. Tip of the hat to Jenn Vix and Vernon Reid to take this on. A very bold move to one of Phil Collins' most popular singles and one he still likes! Sorry, "Sussudio."
