TaeHa, 'City Lights - The Mini Album' (NewRetroWave)

From Berry Good to TaeHa

Taeha's music career initially began with South Korean alll girl group, Berry Good in 2014. The group remained active until 2021 but Taeha, who fronted the group left in 2019 when her contract with the group had ended.

Since then, she has a released a series of singles but for 2024, she exclusively released two singles for her first mini album under the NewRetroWave label, which make up half of four original songs.

Under the new label, remixes by NRW alumni make up the rest of the release, such as Miami Nights 1984, WOLFCLUB, Shadowrunner amd Stilz.

City Lights - The Mini Album Review

12751235872?profile=RESIZE_710x

For the most part this album is danceable which is to be expected from a NewRetroWave release and with TaeHa leaning hard into pop, this proves to be a perfect union.

The title track, "City Lights" is the right way to kick start this album. "Slow Motion" is anything but, giving the album a bit of a disco vibe. At times the percussion recalls that of New Jack Swing of Bell Biv DeVoe's "Poison", if only for a little bit. Very triggering for those of us who are nostalgic.

Taeha (태하) "Dive in Love" (Official Music Video)

Taeha (태하) "Satellite" (Official Music Video)

Of the four original tracks, "Dive In Love", the first single is perhaps the weakest track on this album untill Miami Nights 1984's remix later on, which still isn't bad. It's only so because of how strong of a track the "Satellite" single that follows is.The track goes for a more chill groove,

Shadowrunner (Los Angeles) breathes some new life into his remix for "City Lights" as does Stilz (Calgary.) All of these tracks get the appropriate dancefloor treatment in the remixes but the final track Taeha x Woob - <MISLD> really goes all cyberpunk on the dancefloor. It doesn't sound like a remix of any particular track as much as remixes of various phrases from other tracks.

Overall, if it wasn't for the remixes, this would be a very short and therefore not very satisfying listen. TaeHa would greatly benefit rebranding herself as a synthwave artist thanks to this label. What adds to the durability of this is the fact that this also has a very limited vinyl and CD release. So, snag yourself one of those if you still can!
