"Seed of Evil" with PIG

To fire off the latest batch of releases, earlier this year, Fryer and Raymond Watts of KMFDM / PIG collaborated for the "Seed of Evil" single.

If you don't already know, Watts and Fryer have worked together before with This Mortal Coil.

Fryer and Joseph Seugerling of Psionic Broadcast agreed to make a video for the track likely around or right before the international pandemic which they appropriately did remotely with Fryer and actress Anjela Piccard filming and finally editing in L.A. while Watts did his footage in London.

John Fryer:

“Joseph Seuferling first came to my attention when I saw he had a film called ‘I Am God and BNN had not long just release a song with the same name. So I contacted Joseph and asked if he would like to meet next time he was in LA. Anjela & I went to meet with Joseph Seuferling at the Roosevelt Hotel and whilst we were talking, I asked him he would like to make a video for “Seed Of Evil”. He liked the song so he agreed to make a video. So Raymond shot his footage in London and Joseph got to work."

In fact, right before the release of Watts' and Fryer's single, BNN released "I Am God" which you can check out here and is nothing short of amazing.

The track features the vocals of Marselle Hodges of Seattle's own The Blue Hour.

Praise the lard!

"She Talks To Angels"

Covering this song by The Black Crowes seems like an odd one on paper but Fryer's genius guarantees that whatever decision he makes will always turn out to be the correct one.

Certainly, one of those decisions was to bring local L.A. vocalist and wife Anjela Piccard onboard which makes this cover a strong one.

Already, from the time she drops the first few notes, I already forgot the original as Fryer and Piccard make it their own.

"What A Wonderful World"

Finally we come to the second release for the upcoming These Mortal Covers album which Cleopatra is due to release before the end of a rather turbulent year.

This one makes sense in that while somewhat grim, it still does what the song has always done and that is to show some optimism.

Fryer:

"I have always loved the Louis Armstrong version of 'Wonderful World' from when I heard it as a child and it has stayed with me ever since. So I wanted to make a very different cinematic version, a very depressingly apocalyptic version with an uplifting feel. I thought of Tom Berger my friend for many a year to sing it and I think he has done an amazing job to convey those haunting sentiments."

Berger and John Fryer's relationship goes back into the '90s when Tom's band Sundealers were signed onto John's Something To Listen To label.

They continued to collab with on DarkDriveClinic and then there's Berger's latest project Jonny Tupolev.

Here's what he had to say about his version of Armstrong's classic.

"For me it was a real challenge to sing the vocals of a classical piece of music. After John sent me the instrumental version, I thought it's not possible - How can I transform such a fragile and innocent melody into such a massive wall of sound? And that was the thing: I sang it like I‘d never heard the 1967 original. The result is not just a cover - it's something new - and I’m very proud of the final result."
