A Special Screening Of 'The Hateful Eight' At The Texas Theatre

Part of The Texas Theatre's series of Ennio Morricone-scored films included "The Hateful Eight" and I had to go see it. Mostly because this is one Tarantino movie that I never did see on the big screen. Unlike other movies, this one had a special roadshow tour when it came out in 2015. That I missed that always bothered me. It was a surprise though when going to this one-time showing, that they were doing the roadshow cut of this film. Of course, it's not quite the same because we were told when It did come to Dallas, the roadshow went to Northpark's cinema screens. It would be standard to do a roadshow in a large theatre such as The Majestic downtown back when they were done in the earlier part of the 20th Century.

Now, I've watched "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood" when it came out at The Texas Theatre wherein one of the screenings, for one night only, they were going to double feature it with "The Wrecking Crew". I didn't attend it but we were also told by the theatre worker that they were able to get a print sent to them to do it, but that it took some negotiating. In a similar situation, we were told that this 35mm print was rarely let out from the vault. They weren't specific but I assume this is from Tarantino's vault?

I ended up taking my mom to see this as we hadn't seen a movie for a very long time. The last film we saw together was, ironically, "Django Unchained" which she didn't like that much. But for some reason, she liked this one. This cut has the overture and the intermission which broke it up nicely. It was the overture, however, that moved me, even though I have the score on vinyl and have heard it quite a few times. There's a reason that Score won an Oscar that year. It's menacing and made this film-watching experience a lot grander than I expected. I've been going over Tarantino's work lately and found that the rotation of favorites, "Django Unchained" is my favorite right now. Watching this again, however, makes me appreciate so much more. Cinema at its best!
