Presidential Debate: FOP Endorses Trump

The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) has long been a prominent player in shaping public opinion around law enforcement, especially as concerns over police brutality continue to grow. During an election year as the presidential debates between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump nears, with law and order being a central topic, the FOP's stance plays a critical role in influencing how these issues are framed.

Over the years when officers have been criticized, law enforcement organizations often give pushback, including the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). When this happens, it can seem like the FOP is defying the very communities they are supposed to serve, suggesting that they prioritize force and control over public safety. The recent FOP endorsement of Trump sends a loud message, aligning themselves with a figure known for endorsing authoritarian tactics, and highlighting their alignment with more aggressive policing policies.

The endorsement occurred during a private event in North Carolina, further emphasizing the FOP's backing of Trump’s "law and order" platform. This isn’t the first time the FOP has stirred controversy. A notable example was when Quentin Tarantino, the acclaimed director, faced boycotts from the FOP and other unions for taking a stand against police brutality. Instead of addressing the issue, the FOP retaliated with thinly veiled threats by the executive director, Jim Pasco saying:

“Something is in the works, but the element of surprise is the most important element. Something could happen anytime between now and [the premiere of The Hateful Eight]. And a lot of it is going to be driven by Tarantino, who is nothing if not predictable. The right time and place will come up, and we’ll try to hurt him in the only way that seems to matter to him, and that’s economically.”

When asked if this was a threat, Pasco claimed it wasn’t physical, adding, “Police officers protect people, they don’t go out to hurt people.” However, with the FOP endorsing Trump, a candidate known for his promise of retribution if re-elected, their alignment reflects an increasing readiness to support such hardline tactics.

As the date for the presidential debate nears, it's being reported that each candidate is preparing in different ways. Harris is following debate rules while Trump will likely defy them. In fact, rather than hold mock debates as Harris is, he's making appearances on podcasts and various events, such as the one with the FOP endorsement. The relevance of this is with his portrayal of Harris and the enforcement of the law.

What The Fraternal Order of Police Endorsement of Trump Means

Trump has made it clear that if he "wins" the election (more like if he successfully steals it,) he promises retribution against everyone he sees as his enemy. He of course promises to use the power of law enforcement to carry out his intended weaponization of the Department of Justice. Picture immigrants, women who seek, now outlawed productive rights, the media, protesters, and easily anyone who stands against him.

At a rally in Wisconsin, Trump set the tone by attacking the Democratic White House, labeling it a "rogue regime." He escalated the rhetoric by accusing the administration of importing "murderers, child predators, and serial rapists from all over the planet," all while weaponizing law enforcement against political opponents. The irony is glaring. Trump, who has been embroiled in criminal investigations himself, uses these same accusations to undermine his opponents. Despite this, he still secured the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), which speaks volumes about their alignment.

He didn't stop there—Trump issued sweeping threats aimed at anyone standing against him, including volunteers at ballot locations and donors supporting Harris. It’s another troubling sign of a police force willing to back a man eager to sow chaos. Why not endorse a prosecutor like Kamala Harris, someone dedicated to justice?

The hypocrisy of FOH endorsing a criminal with authoritarian ambitions hasn’t gone unnoticed. Clarence Birkhead, sheriff of Durham County, made it clear he wasn’t on board, announcing that he and over 100 other officers were throwing their support behind Harris-Walz instead. Trump's potential return to the White House will certainly undermine the progress made in holding law enforcement accountable for misconduct. Conversely, a victory for Kamala Harris would likely cast the FOP's endorsement of Trump in a negative light, as being on the wrong side of history.

There’s a serious threat in our nation during this election cycle. Among them is Doug Mastriano a right-wing candidate for Governor of Pennsylvania.

Were it not for the momentum that Trump created to overturn the 2020 election, there could be very little hope for his MAGAts to build support for their campaigns for down-ballot positions that would guarantee them direct access to the electoral…
