Watch Party Saturdays
First Double-Feature (Tuesday)
I started my screening run this week with a documentary called "Some Kind of Heaven".
"Behind the gates of a palm tree-lined fantasyland, four residents of America's largest retirement community, The Villages, FL, strive to find solace and meaning."
I then paired it with "Supernova".
"Sam and Tusker are traveling across England in their old RV to visit friends, family, and places from their past. Since Tusker was diagnosed with dementia two years ago, their time together is the most important thing they have."
The reason for this pairing is pretty obvious on the surface dealing with age and deterioration. Despite some of the darker angles seen in some of these stories, there's a constant fluctuation between both of these films, there more I think about them, where a complacent level of acceptance is always fleeting.
"Some Kind Of Heaven" (REVIEW)#2, (WEDNESDAY)
On my second pairing, I decided to take a big step in a much darker direction and started with "Don't Tell a Soul".
"Two thieving teenage brothers, stealing money to help their sick mom, match wits with a troubled security guard stuck at the bottom of a forgotten well."
It only made sense to follow that with "The Little Things".
"Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe Deacon is sent to Los Angeles for what should have been a quick evidence-gathering assignment. Instead, he becomes embroiled in the search for a serial killer who is terrorizing the city."

First Triple-Feature (Thursday)
I was having trouble trying to separate these three so fuck it, why not go ahead with the Triple-Feature!?
I started off with "Run Hide Fight"
"17-year-old Zoe Hull uses her wits, survival skills, and compassion to fight for her life, and those of her fellow classmates, against a group of live-streaming school shooters."

with "The Marksman"
"A rancher on the Arizona border becomes the unlikely defender of a young Mexican boy desperately fleeing the cartel assassins who've pursued him into the U.S."
and "No Man's Land'.
"When a vigilante border patrol turns fatal, a man flees on horseback to Mexico, seeking forgiveness from the victim's father."
Third Double-Feature (Friday)
First one up was "The Reckoning".
"Evelyn, a young widow haunted by the recent suicide of her husband Joseph, is falsely accused of being a witch by her Landlord after she rejects his advances."
paired with "The Resort".
"Four friends head to Hawaii to investigate reports of a haunting at an abandoned resort in hopes of finding the infamous Half-Faced Girl. When they arrive, they soon learn you should be careful what you wish for."
First Double-Feature Exploitation Watch Party (Saturday Afternoon)
This is the event that triggered this whole movie challenge for me. The plan here is to do double-feature watch parties every Saturday afternoon, showing the kind of b-movie stuff they would run on television during that time of the day when I was a kid. Here are the movies I paired up for this first event!
"Grizzly"
"An eighteen-foot-tall grizzly bear terrorizes a state park, leaving it up to a Park Ranger to save the day."
Following that, we screened "Day of the Animals"!
"A battle for survival ensues after a group of hikers encounters a chemically imbalanced forest."
What's especially great about these watch parties is that a lot of the streaming service platforms that are doing these will include chatrooms similar to Twitch. Second Triple-Feature (Saturday Evening)
Of course, being that the event started at 1 PM that afternoon and ended a little after 4, I figured I'd get cocky and squeeze in triple feature and started off with "Silk Road"
"Philosophical twenty-something Ross Ulbricht creates Silk Road, a dark net website that sells drugs, while DEA agent Rick Bowden goes undercover to bring him down."
"Body Brokers"
"Brought to Los Angeles for treatment, a recovering junkie soon learns that the rehab center is not about helping people, but a cover for a multi-billion-dollar fraud operation that enlists addicts to recruit other addicts."
... and finally "Crisis".
"Three stories about the world of opioids collide: a drug trafficker arranges a multi-cartel Fentanyl smuggling operation between Canada and the U.S., an architect recovering from an oxycodone addiction tracks down the truth behind her son's involvement with narcotics, and a university professor battles unexpected revelations about his research employer, a drug company with deep government influence bringing a new "non-addictive" painkiller to market."
